The Rector, Colin Campbell, announced that the newly remodeled office building had received a new name. A cardboard box had been placed in the sanctuary where people could put their suggestions for a name for the new office, and by far the person that most people wanted to name the remodeled space after was Arthur B. Poole. At that time, Arthur had been a leader at St. Mark’s for the entire history of the parish. Colin Campbell wrote:
God does his work through people, and the ministry of Arthur Poole is a bright light through the entire 35 year history of St. Mark’s. Grace, steadiness and humor are pieces of his ministry that enrich us all. Once Arthur accepted that the office building would be named after him, he rejoiced in the several meanings of the new name – The Poole Hall. He knows humor is a good part of religion, and that the name includes all of his family.
The St. Mark’s Choir and Choir Director, Joseph Hansen, were preparing for a Palm Sunday performance of the Matthaeus-Passion of Heinrich Schuetz. Hansen noted that “the entire work is sung without instrumental accompaniement, much in the style of the Church’s original ‘turba’ where individuals sing the parts of the Narrator/Eveangelist and the various characters of the Passion, while the choir represents various groups involved in the action.
The Sunday School children were working to raise money for one or more goats for Project Heifer.
The ECW (Episcopal Church Women) were planning their annual Rummage Sale, kicked off with the annual Rummage Sale fashion show. The Fashion Show featured members of the ECW and staff modeling outfits that would later be for sale in the Rummage Show. The evening also included the installation of the new ECW Board and dessert.
Outreach events mentioned included a gourment dinner/auction to raise funds for Stanford Canterbury, a request for Food Closet donations, a request for volunteer ESL teachers, information about how to sign up for the annual Ecumenical Hunger Program walk, and a request for rooms to rent for visiting scholars and students.
Assistant Rector, Brad Hall, invited parishioners to gather to discuss a tv movie about the lives of Peter and Paul.
Easter services were held at 7am, 9am and 11am on Sunday, April 19th.
What a glorious period of time in St. Mark’s fabled history…..!!
Arthur B. Poole, a lion of dedicated energy from the very beginning days until well into his late eighties. One of the great pics in our library of photos is Arthur personally burning the mortgage on the church. Brad Hall ably served our church and then moved to Palm Springs to become rector of a very large parish that included a church school. Colin gave so much to our parish family and successfully overcame alcoholism to be a very effective and loved rector….!! We can all take great pride that such distinguished people served and prayed for us……!!!
