Becoming Beloved Community Task Force: Summer reading and documentary recommendations

It was gratifying to see 40 people attend our Forum on Reparations a month ago where we discussed Episcopal priest Rev. Peter Jarret-Schell’s book, Reparations.

The Task Force is taking a break this summer and would like to reconvene with two forums in the Fall, one on a Summer Parish read and the other on a Summer Parish movie, a documentary that our own Rev. Matt recommends:

a.     Parish Summer Read: Reparations by Peter Jarrett Schell Reparations

b.     Parish Summer Movie: Descendant, available on Netflix

Descendant is a 2022 documentary film directed by Margaret Brown, chronicling the story behind Africatown in Alabama, and the descendants of the last known enslaved Africans brought to the United States aboard the Clotilda.

Additionally, many of you ask us what’s happening with reparations in California.  Since our Forum, the State Task Force on Reparations has released its report and recommendations to the California State Legislature.  Here is a link that describes both.  Reparations article

Have a good and safe summer and let’s meet again in the Fall.
