Church Picnics

St. Mark’s has been celebrating every June with a church picnic for at least 50 years! The venue has changed, but the general activities have remained the same with a few variations….sack races, egg or water balloon tosses, more recently dunk tanks and trivia contests…and of course always food and fellowship. Here are some pictures from the 1972 church picnic. At this time the picnics were held on the big field at Foothill Park. By the 1990’s, the picnics had moved to Hoover Park adjacent to the church (where they are still held today). If you can identify any people in these pictures, please comment for us!

1972 pictnic at Foothill Park…the sack race!
Egg toss! Now we toss water balloons.

Until recent years, food was usually pot luck, with a BYO barbque. In recent years we’ve switched to a Taco Truck. The 1981 picnic was held June 21st, which was also Father’s Day! The picnic was still held at Foothills Park, and began at 12 noon. Parishioners were instructed to bring their own meat or fish to barbque, and bring a salad, fruit or dessert to share. The Markers provided the beverages. For the picnic on June 14, 1992, parishioners were asked to head to Hoover Park immediately following the 10:15am liturgy. They were requested to sign up after church to bring a non-meat item as well as their meat item to barbque. The church picnic is definitely one of our oldest and best loved traditions.

The kids sack race is always a favorite!
