Stained Glass Window Repair
The Buildings and Grounds commission recently met with Hogan Studios, a stained-glass company recommended by John Miller, Cheryl Miller’s husband. The windows had not been inspected for several years as the former vendor retired from stained-glass work. Several windows required work including St. Gregory, St. Matthew, and St. Thomas. Two windows are in the church, and one window is in the chapel. The windows were removed last week, and Plexiglas panels were put in the empty window
frames.
Hogan Studios described the restoration work for painted stained-glass windows. They will make charcoal rubbings, completely disassemble, and soak and clean all pieces of painted glass. They will match and re-paint several damaged pieces where needed, firing multiple times at 1200 degrees Fahrenheit. The windows will be re-leaded, soldered and waterproofed with reinforcing steel bars soldered directly to the windows for strength. Upon completion Hogan Studios will re-install them back into existing frames.
Currently, these windows are the only ones needing work. As describing the process is complicated, hopefully this article will answer any questions. However, if anyone wants further information, please contact Mary Murphy or Marius Milner.
