The Theater Glass Window – given by Mary Rose

The Theater Glass window is located in the Vestry at St. Mark’s.

The window was given by Mary Rose.

The older window was put into a larger framework by Cummings Glass Studio, San Francisco and its original cost is unknown. It is 27″ x 92″.

There’s a tiny and very damaged little window in the Vestry of the church that most people have never seen. It’s one of two little windows in that room and they are the only two stained glass windows that do not have religious themes. One of the windows was given in memory of Canon West (more on that in the future). The one in this article has a plaque that indicates it was given by Mary Rose – 1882-1965, but the window is listed as being given in 1957 so was possibly given while the donor was still alive. So far we have not figured out who Mary Rose was. There is no paperwork in the files about this window and the original value was recorded as “gift.” No church records to date have been located that mention the gift or Mary Rose. There are no records in our church records for anyone named Mary Rose.

The records do indicate that the center portion of this window is a piece of antique European theater glass, but the date of the theater glass is not recorded. This older round window was set into a larger window by Cummings Glass, but that’s all we know. Whether the Theater Glass for the window was originally from Cummings or gifted by Mary Rose is unknown.

Since it’s located in the Vestry, the Theater Glass window is only visible for most people from outside of the church (Theater Glass window is on the right).

Research is ongoing and hopefully information we will figure out this mystery at some point in time and update this entry. If you know anything about Mary Rose or this window, please let us know! Solving this mystery is going to require some crowdsourcing.
