On Sunday, March 22, the St. Mark’s Becoming Beloved Community Task force and 19 co-sponsoring organizations hosted retired Judge LaDoris Hazzard Cordell at our sixth Community, Faith and Justice speaker event.

Judge Cordell’s topic was The Eleventh Commandment: How Activism Has and Continues to be Critical to the Preservation of Our Democracy.

Judge Cordell shared an inspiring slide show highlighting courageous activists who fought for democracy and justice over the years. She encouraged us to emulate the courage and activism of those who cared so deeply about these values. She answered a wide ranging set of questions from our audience of 89 people, handed out a list of 10 suggestions for judicial reforms discussed in her book, Her Honor, and gave out bookmarks designed as the $20 Harriet Tubman bill that was proposed but has not yet been issued. She asked us to look at Harriet Tubman’s image if we became discouraged in fighting for justice.

If you have not yet attended one of our events, please join the 90 – 130 folks who have attended each event. We assure you you will meet some old friends and be delighted with the sense of camaraderie at the event and you will leave with a refreshed sense of purpose in following the prophet Micah to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with our God.
