Palo Alto Safe Parking

At next Monday’s meeting, the Palo Alto City Council will consider establishing a safe parking area for unsheltered individuals living in cars or RVs. The site being considered is detailed in the attached staff report and represents a pilot program that could pave the way for additional options, including use of parking lots at Palo Alto churches that can provide necessary facilities. Please consider sending a message to the City Council as a member of a Palo Alto church, a resident of Palo Alto, or both if it applies, encouraging them to approve this important step in expanding services to our unsheltered neighbors.

City staff and County Supervisor Joe Simitian’s offices are enthusiastic and the site selected seems ideal for such an undertaking. In addition, the agency – Lots of Love – selected to oversee the safe parking site is well-qualified and is successfully overseeing similar programs in Mountain View.

Letters/messages for the Council as a whole can be sent to this email address: You can also reach out to individual members here: If you know a City Council member or live near one, please also consider a direct appeal to them. If you are able to virtually attend the meeting, please contact Rachel Tanner to obtain meeting log-in information (
