event information
On New Year’s Eve, December 31, at 8 p.m., former organist James Welch returns to St. Mark’s for a festive recital of organ masterworks. He will be joined by his son Nicholas at the piano. Nicholas has just returned from Stanford Study Abroad programs in Taiwan and Hong Kong. The program will include Bach’s Prelude in E-flat major, and the incomparable Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor. Nicholas will perform Chopin’s Ballade No. 4, and the first movement of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2; Jim will provide orchestral accompaniment from the organ. Staying in the Christmas mood, Jim has a fun theater-organ arrangement of “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers.” And to close, two movements from Symphony No. 3 by Louis Vierne, organist of Notre Dame Cathedral. Jim performed the Finale of this symphony on his recital at Notre Dame in 2015, just months before the tragic fire that destroyed much of the cathedral—but miraculously the organ was spared.
$10 donation at the door; kids 18 and under free.
